Video # 1 – UNIT 3 – EXPLORATION PROPOSAL

Course Overview
  • The Exploration Proposal is the first and one of the most important, written and visual documents you will complete in VCE Studio Arts.
  • VCAA recommend 5 hours of working time to complete this task.
  • Exploration Proposal documents your ideas, inspiration, use of art elements and principles, materials and techniques, and art forms to be trialled and developed throughout the Studio Process.
  • Your proposal should include visual examples.
  • The proposal is to be completed within the first 4 to 5 weeks of Unit 3 and may be expanded upon in the initial stages of the Studio Process.
  • Present neatly on A4 sheets, typed, inclusive of visual material to support your ideas. Include a Work Plan.  An Exploration Proposal is generally 750 to 1000 words in length (This excludes the Work Plan).
  • presented neatly – type – attribute/include relevant references
Course Steps

STEP 1 >UNDERSTAND HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED – KEY KNOWLEDGE AND KEY SKILLS

  • plan your ideas/concepts within a written and visual proposal –  include a work plan
  • present and discuss conceptual possibilities and art forms to be explored
  • explain the focus and discuss the subject matter intended to communicate your ideas
  • select and discuss your sources of inspiration for your ideas/concepts
  • outline art elements and art principles to create aesthetic outcomes
  • discuss proposed use of materials/ techniques and how they will communicate ideas

STEP 3 > GETTING STARTED & BRAINSTORMING

Many students find it difficult to write about their ideas. Don’t write the Exploration Proposal immediately, approach the task in small steps. Brainstorm, create notes, preliminary sketches, talk to your teacher.  Don’t let the act of writing and annotation in your visual diary overwhelm your creative thinking in the early stages.

STEP 4 > READ  A+ EXPLORATION PROPOSAL

STEP 5 > BEGIN TO WRITE A DRAFT PROPOSAL

Use brainstorming material. Refer to the VCAA key knowledge/key skills whilst preparing your draft.

STEP 6 > REFINE and refine again – read your draft out aloud to yourself

STEP 7 > TEACHER CONSULTATION

Remember it is so important to ask questions, as time is premium.

STEP 8 > what can go wrong – Potential Hurdles

  • The Exploration Proposal has no cohesive structure
  • The idea presents as confusing and/or too grandiose
  • The spelling/grammar and construction of paragraphs is poor
  • Art terminology is not used
  • No images are included  – The word count is too low
  • The Exploration Proposal submitted is a total surprise to your teacher
  • The VCAA key knowledge and key skills are only partially addressed
  • It is unreadable or worse – unable to be found in the visual diary.

STEP 8 >Completion check and recheck
